USSR

The General Assembly of the IUGG in Toronto in 1957 marked the first time when a sizable delegation of scientists from the USSR attended an international meeting. Romanian scientists were also in attendence there. As a consequence of the meeting, Jock accepted an invitation to visit Romania almost immediately following its conclusion. All the Romanian photos here were taken on this trip. As a consequence of Jock’s having been elected President of the IUGG at the Toronto meeting, the USSR also invited him to visit and lecture there. The photos here, from Russia and Georgia, were taken on the resulting trip, which took place the following year, in 1958. It appears that this trip as originally planned was to be confined to the eastern regions of the USSR. However, when the IUGG executive asked him to visit both Chinas as well, Jock arranged to travel from Moscow through western Russia to Peking via the Trans Siberian Railway. So far as is known, Jock only visited Georgia once, but he did return to Romania a second time years later and visited Russia many times.
